The New York Philharmonic played its first concert in New York in 1869. The philharmonic's first director was the resistor and musician john emmerson. Emmerson, who had been teaching at the New York academy of music, decided to create a music school for the philharmonic and began operations in 1876. The philharmonic continued to be operated and managed by the academy until 1948.

The concert was heated and some of the members were a little emotional, but the orchestra did its job and provided a great show. The music was well-maintained and the staff and equipment were up to date.
